When she returned home, Janie made herself a time capsule about her life and her three husbands. She buried it and it was dug up years later by a child trying to dig a garden. The capsule and the articles inside it show how she changed with each of her husbands; how interacting with and living with them changed who she is and how she viewed life, and how each directed her onto a different life path.
